MIGRATION TO NAPTAN V2 : IMPORTANT INFORMATION As you are aware, the NaPTAN database standard has been revised and migration to the new version 2 standard is now under way. The Department for Transport requires ALL authorities to complete this migration before December 2006. As you will be aware, Trandata (under contract to the DfT) recently despatched your copy of the NaPTAN 2 Editor tool to you. It would be helpful to know now if you intend to use this Editor, or if you intend to use an editor from another supplier (such as Trapeze or Omnibus Systems) - please e-mail me at roger.slevin@dft.gsi.gov.uk with details if you are planning to use an alternative editor. You will still, however, remain entitled to use the Trandata tool if, in due course, you find this to be more appropriate after all. The remainder of this letter is important to all those who expect to use the Trandata Editor which has already been sent to you. The CD or DVD supplied by Trandata included a copy of your authority's data in NaPTAN v2 format, copied from the national database at the point of despatch. Recent information from Thales, however, indicates that you have not yet changed to using the NaPTAN v2 software - and that your recent updates to the national database have continued to use v1 format files. It is almost certain, therefore, that the data supplied with your NaPTAN v2 Editor is now out of date - and it is essential that an updated copy of your data is obtained before you migrate to using the new editing tools. With the deadline to migrate to NaPTAN v2 at the end of 2006, it is important that you start submitting in NaPTAN v2 XML format as soon as possible. By starting now you will have a chance to bring your data up to NaPTAN 2 quality standards before the deadline. One critical issue that needs to be resolved before migration to NaPTAN v2 is the correction of any 'PENding' records. These are records which have been physically removed from your database since a previous upload (which is not permitted in NaPTAN), either accidentally or instead of being marked as DELeted. The records for these stops need to be reinstated correctly, and then marked with the appropriate status so they can be imported to NaPTAN v2. Although the data that Trandata shipped on your installation CD or DVD is now probably out-of-date, Trandata's contract from DfT provides for them to prepare a new NaPTAN 2 format database from your current data (as held by Thales) when you are ready to migrate. Trandata will work with you to ensure that this is done at a time that is convenient for you. You will need to make a last submission to Thales in v1 format. Trandata will then download this from Thales to populate a new NaPTAN v2 database for use with the NaPTAN v2 Editor software. The new database would then be made available for you to download to your computer from Trandata's website. This whole process should take about a week, from the day you make your final upload in NaPTAN v1 format to the date you will be able to start editing again using the new Editor software. But it is important to make the arrangements with Trandata in advance to ensure the process runs smoothly. To make arrangements for a new copy of your database, please e-mail support@trandata.co.uk, explaining when you propose to make your final NaPTAN upload in v1. If you haven't done so already, it is also important that you register your copy of the NaPTAN 2 Editor tool with Trandata. This will allow you to download updated versions of the Editor from Trandata's website. The current version is v2.1.3. To register your copy, please go to: http://www.trandata.co.uk/register To download the latest version of the software, please go to: http://www.trandata.co.uk/naptan2update I look forward to seeing an increasing number of authorities managing their data in NaPTAN v2 format over the coming weeks, and uploading their data in this format to Thales. These new arrangements are essential to improve the quality and usability of NaPTAN data which already underpins the operation of traveline, Transport Direct and other information services. NaPTAN data is also critical to the success of electronic bus service registration which is now being piloted in two areas, and which is expected to be launched nationwide during the coming year. Please feel free to contact me at roger.slevin@dft.gsi.gov.uk if you have any questions about any aspects of these arrangements or related matters.
