Chris Noted - thanks. This to me sounds like a question whether it is worth having a new sub-mode, or whether it is simply a lift that is not vertical. Does it have different user constraints from those of a conventional lift (which I perceive to be primarily claustrophobia). The fact it may be open sided may change that characteristic - but then we don’t differentiate lifts which are fully enclosed and those with glass sides which can set off a fear of heights in people like me. One for an interesting discussion at PTIC then! For UK standards consideration, a new transport sub-mode: Kone to install first incline lifts at rail stations Greenford is to become the first railway station in the UK to have an incline lift installed following the signing of a £45m deal with Kone to supply lifts for Crossrail and other Transport for London stations……. Crossrail will introduce funicular-style incline lifts with two operating alongside escalators at the new Farringdon eastern ticket hall and the Liverpool Street western ticket hall where it would be difficult to install vertical lifts. But the first installation - the first incline lift to be installed at a railway station in the UK - will be at Greenford, a London Underground station which is served by the Central line as well as the national rail branch line from West Ealing. TfL abandoned work to make Greenford step free in 2009 following budget cuts after spending an estimated £4m on the project. The reinstatement of a step free scheme is partly motivated by Crossrail works at the other end of the branch line where a major upgrade of West Ealing station will provide step free access between platforms. This is needed because through trains from Greenford to Paddington are due to be replaced with a shuttle service between Greenford and West Ealing where frequent Crossrail connections will be available. Miles Ashley, London Underground programme director of stations, said: "Greenford station will benefit from the first of the five incline lifts and represents an innovative approach in providing our customers with improved access. Incline lifts afford us better opportunities to facilitate access where more traditional lift arrangements prove impossible to accommodate. Working jointly with Crossrail on this major lifts procurement has resulted in significantly better value for LU and TfL and will ensure that we increasingly deliver world class levels of reliability to our customers." Martin Rowark, Crossrail procurement director, said: "All Crossrail stations in central London will have step free access from street to train. The new incline lifts offer an added benefit by allowing groups travelling together to have passengers with wheelchairs, buggies or large baggage to take an incline lift while friends and family take an escalator directly alongside. These incline lifts will allow Crossrail to provide full step free access at Farringdon and Liverpool Street stations where the platforms will sit below existing buildings, preventing the installation of traditional vertical lifts." _____ Think before you print.
